The Diamond Cutting Process…
The process of finishing a diamond, from a rough diamond into a
polished gemstone, is both an art and a science.
• Cleaving separates a rough diamond into
separate pieces to be finished.
• Bruting grinds two diamonds into round shapes with spinning
axles.
• Polishing the diamond’s facets is the final step
before the final inspection.
• Final inspection cleans the diamond in acids and examines
the quality
The Diamond Buying Process…
1/100 carat = 0.01 carat
The price for an engagement ring or wedding rings can vary considerably
depending on the materials used and the value of the diamond. Carats
measure the weight of a diamond, and the point unit is used for
diamonds of less than one carat. The price will increase significantly
on diamonds weighing over 0.99 carats. Clarity measures the number
of internal defects, called inclusions, in a diamond. Inclusions
may be crystals or imperfections such as tiny cracks. The number,
size, color, relative location, orientation, and visibility of inclusions
can all affect the clarity of a diamond. Only about 20 percent of
all diamonds mined have a clarity rating high enough for use as
a gemstone. Diamonds are graded on a scale ranging from flawless
to imperfect.
Gold
and Platinum…
Gold is a precious metal that occurs in rocks, underground
in alluvial deposits. It is dense, soft, shiny and yellow with good
resistance to oxidative corrosion.
Platinum is more precious than gold and is wear- and tarnish-resistance.
The price of platinum is slightly less than twice the price of gold.
Rare Gemstones…
• Rubies are exceptionally rare and can vary from a light
pink to a blood red.
• Emeralds are the most valuable and can vary from green and
bluish green.
• Sapphires can be found in large crystal boules, in a wide
